Alex Putzer

Non-Resident Fellow

Alex Putzer researches the theory, documentation, and implementation of the rights of nature in cities. As a UN Harmony with Nature Expert and member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, he has co-developed the Eco Jurisprudence Monitor, the world’s leading database in the field.

Currently, Alex is affiliated with the Guarini Center and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice NICHE, while also working in ocean policy for the German Ocean Foundation. Together with two colleagues, he is about to publish the first-ever book on the rights of urban natures, which offers a practical introduction to the discipline for an architecture and urbanism audience.

Following his thesis defense with highest honors, Alex became a postdoctoral Fulbright-Schuman Researcher at NYU, and has continued his work as an MSCA Fellow at TU Delft. Frequently giving talks and writing op-eds within an academic, professional, and civil society context, Alex has taught seminars at several European universities.

In addition to his academic endeavors, Alex is also an activist. He has co-drafted the Declaration of the Rights of the Venice Lagoon and advises initiatives in Latin America and Europe. His work has featured in multiple art and architecture exhibitions, including in Rotterdam, Lisbon, Venice, and Doha.

Alex is eager to discover yet unidentified questions for his research and beyond. Reach out as he loves collaborating with academics, activists, and artists from all fields.
