SUMMARY:NYU Cardozo Robotaxi Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In the past year\, interest in robotaxis in New York has surged. Last summer\, Waymo started testing its vehicles on Manhattan streets. In January\, Governor Hochul proposed automated vehicle pilot programs upstate. But in February\, she withdrew her proposal under pressure. And in March\, Waymo’s testing permit expired. The future of robotaxis in New York is an open question. This Symposium will explore the legal and policy issues that robotaxis raise. Our goal is to enrich the public conversation by bringing together experts from around the country to share their knowledge and experience. There will be two panels: one on robotaxis and road safety and one on robotaxis and urban policy. Speakers from academia\, government\, industry\, and nonprofits with a range of views will participate. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration\nThursday\, May 28\, 2026\n1:30-6:00 pm\nDoors open at 1:00 pm \nNYU School of Law\nLester Pollack Colloquium Room\nFurman Hall\, 245 Sullivan Street\, New York NY \nEvent agenda and registration HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists\nAnn Carlson\, Shirley Shapiro Professor of Environmental Law\, UCLA\, and former Acting Administrator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration \nRachel Castignoli\, Senior Consultant\, City of Austin\, Texas \nYonah Freemark\, Lead\, Practice Area on Fair Housing\, Land Use\, and Transportation\, Urban Institute \nKevin Gay\, Senior Director\, Global Head of Safety for Autonomous Mobility & Delivery\, Uber \nNoah Goodall\, Senior Research Scientist\, Virginia Transportation Research Council \nMeera Joshi\, President of Green-Wood Cemetery\, and former Deputy Mayor for Operations\, New York City \nJody Kelman\, former Executive Vice President of Customers\, Lyft \nPhil Koopman\, Professor Emeritus\, Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Carnegie Mellon University \nBrad Templeton\, Senior Contributor\, Forbes\, and Chairman Emeritus of the Electronic Frontier Foundation \nBryant Walker Smith\, Associate Professor\, School of Law\, University of South Carolina \nMatt Wansley\, Professor of Law\, Cardozo School of Law \nKatrina Wyman\, Wilf Family Professor of Property Law\, NYU School of Law\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Guarini Center on Environmental\, Energy & Land Use Law at NYU Law  and the Heyman Center on Corporate Governance  at the Cardozo School of Law.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLE\nCLE — New York CLE credit is pending.
